Willows Wins First Race TodayRichard Willows took another RS Vareo race win today in the light shifty conditions. RS Games RSVareo Runners and Riders With 23 boats already entered the 2011 RS Vareo National Championships are already larger than last year and there are a lot of fresh new faces in the fleet. Nine races are scheduled over three days from 20-22nd August meaning some intense competition for this single-handed class. As part of the unique RS Games multi-class championship extravaganza back onshore the RS Vareo competitors will join sailors and supporters from up to eight other RS classes to enjoy a busy inter-class social schedule including the Mount Gay Rum Championship Ball. With some 800 competitors taking part in the RS Games over a 12-day period this will be an exciting event to be part of. And with the championship taking place at st1:city w:st= and quot;on and quot;Weymouth/st1:city and st1:place w:st= and quot;on and quot;st1:placename w:st= and quot;on and quot;Portland/st1:placename st1:placename w:st= and quot;on and quot;National/st1:placename st1:placename w:st= and quot;on and quot;Sailing/st1:placename st1:placetype w:st= and quot;on and quot;Academy/st1:placetype/st1:place sailors will have the added exhilaration of competing at the 2012 Olympic venue exactly one year ahead of the Games. With a number of top dogs from the last few years RS Vareo National Championships moving on to apply their talents in other classes this has really opened up the potential to see some new names climb up the rankings in 2011. But if the last 12 months are anything to go by the actual overall Championship title is likely to be scooped by one of two boats: Andrew Wilson (Datchet) was 3rd at last years Nationals with Richard Willows (Rodeford) a few points behind in 4th place overall. This form has been repeated constantly in the last year as these two have been the total dominant forces always occupying 1st and 2nd at every event they have taken part in. Keen observers will know that Andrew has held the advantage during the majority of the season; can Richard produce the result when it is needed? Of course others in the field will have plenty to say and three of last years top ten are also going to be at Weymouth; look out for Julian Brooke Houghton from Cargreen; Chris Moore who has recently put in a good result at the Flying Fifteen Worlds; and Cheryl Wood. Last but not least Geoff Shaw (Rodeford) is also capable of some good form as his third place at the 2007 RS Vareo Nationals showed. RS Vareo Vote for New Spinnaker Design closes July 10thRSVareo proposal for new spinnaker design u1:p/u1:p u5:p/u5:p u1:p/u1:p The RSVareo class asked RS in 2009 to develop a new spinnaker. The current one has a very full shape which makes it not very effective on reaches. Vareo sailors who race round the buoys (rather than on windward/leeward courses) were particularly keen on getting a flatter cut. The other proposed change was to move to a radial cut to make the sail shape more stable and to give it a much longer competitive life. The spinnaker was developed in discussion with the RS Vareo Class Association committee and was tested by Andy Temple and the Broadstairs Vareo fleet and latterly by Andrew Wilson your Class Representative. The RS Association Management Committee are in favour of this proposal. u1:p/u1:p u1:pu5:p/u5:p u5:pAll RS Vareo Class members have been sent a FAST NEWS email with a voting form. If you have not received an email please contact debbie@rs-association.com The vote closes at midnight on Sunday July 10th 2011. /u5:p/u1:p RS Vareo Aluminium Foils InformationRS Sailing are now supplying aluminium foils as standard after the previous supplier was unable to maintain delivery. The daggerboard is straightforward it should fit all ages of boat easily. The rudder blade does not fit the existing rudder stock: New aluminium blades will have to be supplied with the matching new injection moulded stock: When purchased for a RS Vareo the entire unit will be GBP165 (as opposed to GBP149 for an old style rudder blade). The only small modification will be to replace the retaining clip to ensure correct operation of the item. The hole spacing of the gudgeon and pintle is the same. This is an introductory offer and will be maintained for the Vareo for 3 years. There are a number of second hand blades which can be supplied as spares in the short term if required: These would be available at GBP75 while stocks last. (Excuse the pun!)
