2007 GUL RS VAREO National Championship, Netley SC

It’s Official – RS Vareo is now firmly on the map in the UK Racing scene. 2007 at Netley SC on the Solent saw a record 47 competing boats. RS Vareo Owners Club Rules Representative (a very busy man these days – more of this below), Dave Machin – as a Netley SC member worked very hard with his fellow members to pull off a great event, and all who competed give a tremendous thank you to the club. We had weather from light up to gust of F6+ so no-one could say they didn’t find ideal conditions in there somewhere. Netley also arranged for post-racing coaching video and critique, so we couldn’t escape big brother CCTV on the water. All found this extremely useful and by day 3 there were some noticeably different tactics afoot. By way of comparison, the nationals turnouts for other classes: RS300 (31), RS500 (30), RS400 (59), RS600 (34), RS700 (51), RS800 (50).

An extensive table (thanks to Nigel Best via Yahoo Newsgroup) for those into stats: http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/classes/?s=44

Chh Chh Chh Changes…
There are some possible rules changes coming up - the imminent one (vote to be taken to adopt) concerns attachment of shrouds. This has arisen as the rig was originally designed so that the shrouds would be taut and require use of the main halyard to clip them on and off the deck eye mounting. The experience of the fleet shows that the manufacturing tolerances, stretch in the wire and distortion of the Winchard hook used to attach the shrouds to the deck eye all contribute to the shrouds having more slack than the original design intent. In some cases this has led to extreme mast bend with some masts adopting a permanent bend. The proposed amendment provides a cheap solution to enable shroud to be tensioned correctly. The photograph below shows how the new arrangement would look.

For a first hand experience, get along to Rutland for the GUL Inland Championships on Oct 20-21. Help will be at hand to make sure you are fully acquainted with the layout.
Discussed during a meeting held during the Nationals at Netley it was announced that trials by top Vareo sailors in close collaboration with LDC would be conducted on redesign of mainsail and elongation of the spinnaker pole. As of date of publishing this e-Newsletter it is understood that longer pole shall now not be pursued as tests showed that in strong winds the pole was subjected to too much strain. The sail (which entails a lower clew) by way of addition of more material – resulting in a more parallel aspect to the water is still undergoing further testing. It is understood that pointing capability is enhanced with no undue increase in hiking required. Another excellent reason to come to Rutland will be the opportunity to inspect and possibly even try out the trial rig.

RS Vareo GUL Inland Championships 2007
Time to prepare for the last non-winter event left : the GUL RS Inland Championship. This is a great chance to re-test these skills before the weather becomes a major factor. Can we beat our own record of 47 ? As mentioned above it is also a chance to get fully up to speed with the changes being adopted and considered for adoption. Rutland is centrally located for a lot of the fleet / accommodation is either onsite or there are some comfortable B&Bs in close proximity.
